The ASSET Project Assembly will take place at the University of Reading on Thursday 14th January 2010 Reading and the University Map University of Reading WhiteknightsCampus Map The ASSET Project Assembly will bring together a number of JISC projects and external speakers to discuss the use of video and audio for enhancing staff and student engagement with feedback. The first part of the day will consist of a number of presentations by other JISC projects who are investigating the use of audio/video media for teaching and learning. This will be followed by an ‘open discussion’ session in the afternoon to explore “where next” in terms of using audio/video to enhance teaching and learning, with a particular emphasis on the use of technology to enhance feedback provision to students. For further details of the programme see the ASSET Conference Flier As our assembly we are running this event which is taking place on 14th January 2010, at Kents Hill in Milton Keynes. This free event will include talks looking at how reference management relates to real-time impact metrics, social bookmarking, the semantic web and digital preservation, as well as sessions on the innovative use of reference management software at the Open University and the University of Lincoln. My project (TELSTAR at the Open University) is organising the event and the conference opens with a session where we will share what we have done, and demonstrating the integration between the RefWorks Reference Management software and the Moodle VLE we have developed. For more details, and to register, please see http://www.open.ac.uk/telstar/event. For more information on our project read our blog at http://www.open.ac.uk/blogs/telstar Best wishes, Owen Owen Stephens T: +44 (0) 1908 858701 The TELSTAR (UCLAN) project will be hosting a PebblePad assembly to focus on the issues arising from its application to improve current APEL processes within institutions. The use of ePortfolios to assist with APEL, specifically PebblePad, is believed to be a common issue for many JISC projects. We’d like to determine people’s availability for the two potential dates and then we’ll select the most popular day. Time: 10 – 4 (times may change slightly) Please register your response no later than Weds 2nd December 2009 5pm. Please use Meet-o-Matic to register your availability http://www.meetomatic.com/respond.php?id=N0J92M PROPOSED MEETING DATES: Hello everyone, Many thanks to all of you who participated in our workshop on Wednesday, 4 November. I am attaching the short report we have produced to inform the rest of our community about the events of the day. Please do circulate as widely as you wish and make links from blogs, websites etc. We will be distributing the details of the February 2010 larger Assembly just as soon as we have finalised them. Best wishes, Debra Morris The Steeple Benefits Realisation project is running its first unworkshop – 23rd/24th November. The workshop will be hosted by Nottingham University and run prior to the Nottingham Open Learning conference to allow some cross-program fertilisation.
The Steeple workshop is about hands-on exploration of podcasting technologies such as building institutional video portals and video processing infrastructure (such as Opencast Matterhorn and Apple Podcast Producer).
For more details about the workshop see http://www.steeple.org.uk/wiki/BR/Workshop_November_2009_Nottingham.
If you’re interested, but you cannot come, you’d be welcome to skype in for a bit to get a feel for it. Email steeple@oucs.ox.ac.uk to get in touch!

Date (tbc: Feb/Mar 2010) What staff development needs arise when a new learning technology is being introduced into an institution? How can we manage the multiple, and often conflicting, expectations of what needs to be delivered? This Assembly will focus on lecture capture and podcasting but will be relevant to other learning technologies. It will be a workshop-style day aimed at producing relevant collective resources for use by the wider HE community based on common and divergent experiences in implementing capture technologies for learning and teaching. It would be of interest to those with strategic responsibility for academic staff development or for disseminating key project findings through staff development resources. TELSTAR (UCLAN), an LLLWFD project, intends to host a PebblePad assembly to focus on the issues arising from its application to improve current APEL processes within institutions. The use of ePortfolios to assist with APEL, specifically PebblePad, is believed to be a common issue for many projects in the programme. Please contact us to register your interest. The ECCILES project is using the TRIZ innovation methodology to find green solutions for computer teaching environments which reduce the carbon footprint and improve the working environment. The purpose of the assembly will be to introduce TRIZ and the tools of systematic innovation (including the 40 inventive principles, perception mapping and the use of the contradiction matrix). These approaches can be applied in a wide variety of problem contexts, and the event will demonstrate how some tools have been used within the ECCILES project. The assembly will be an interactive workshop where participants will be able to try out some of the techniques for themselves. The assembly will be of interest to those involved in the Green ICT projects and to any other projects interested in problem solving approaches. The assembly will contribute to one of the project output which is to raise awareness of the potential of the TRIZ systematic innovation approach for solving problem, especially around green issues. Further details are available from Robyn Drinkwater r.drinkwater@reading.ac.uk XCRi Seminar – 7 September 2009, at MMU Introduction to XCRi( Exchanging Course Related Information). The XCRi seminar, like the schema was excellent as an effective exchange of practical experience and ideas. For the CCLiP partners, we are engaged in our first full XCRi implementation experience and Patrick O’Reilly, Bolton, gave some very practical pointers, such as different feeds for U/G and P/G. Hearing of the creation of a search tool for use with XCRi in the Worcester project was extremely useful and Kirstie Coolin, Nottingham, a veteran in cross-sector XCRi implementation gave valuable advice on the nuts and bolts of implementation and problem solving. The group affirmed that the XCRi feed was relatively straightforward; however, determining data controllers and related cultural issues were the common hurdles experienced by institutions. The XCRi ‘gang’ are a fount of knowledge. There was a lively discussion on the ‘University of Scott (Wilson)’, and what an ideal comprehensive XCRi adoption could bring, including enhanced data management capability with the Higher Education Achievement Report. Alan Paull generously offered to test XCRi feeds and his information on field extensions was particularly helpful in relation to our partner cultural employers. Mark’s overview of the development of XCRi from conception in Ty’n Ross and Manchester, through to European compliance next year was acknowledged as an outstanding achievement. It is a privilege to be working with such committed, experienced and generous experts. Erica Jones Culture Campus Liverpool Portal (CCliP) |
